THINK BIG & NEVER UNDERESTIMATE YOUR VALUE
While talking during a Junior Achievement information session you urged me to consider pursuing an MBA. Well, despite my outward response, your suggestion had a serious effect on me. I just wanted you to know that I went home that afternoon and started thinking seriously about an MBA as a possibility, and the rest is history. I am now in the Baylor MBA program and I have you to thank for planting the seed that got me here.

BE PREPARED TO RIDE THAT ELEVATOR ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP!
I went to work and the loan officer at our location was going to meet with two "Big Wig" presidents from the bank. It was a fundraiser they were participating in with a local hospital. Well, the loan officer brought me along to introduce me because, he knew that I wanted to move up within the bank; and also, because the meeting was on the 4th floor of the hospital. When we got to the elevator he said: "well let's hear it... your elevator speech." So I responded with the bull-riding rodeo elevator speech that you and I worked on. They were very impressed!

SUCCESSFUL INTERVIEW
When I walked across the stage and graduated in 2010, I never thought finding a good job would be such a hard task. A few months after graduation, I did some temp work for a large HVAC manufacturer in their marketing department. Although I loved my job, my time in their marketing department was only temporary. Once I left that company, I began to face the difficulties of finding full-time employment. My daily routine was searching online for a job where I could utilize my degree and personal skills. Every time I submitted my resume I was told I didn’t have enough experience, the pay was below my salary requirements, or they were not hiring at the time. To say this was discouraging and depressing would be an understatement. As a young, single mother finding a good job was extremely important to me. I knew my worth and I wasn’t going to settle for anything that couldn’t take care of my family financially, or challenge me mentally.
Finally, in Aug. 2013 my past professor contacted me with a new job opportunity. It was for a great company and the position was in Marketing. So, I immediately went back to the drawing board and took notes on everything I needed to make this interview successful. I used so many things I learned in Mrs. Johnson’s class. A strong one min elevator speech, my brand profile (which highlights all my personal strengths and past work experience), how I could bring value to that company, and examples to back up my statements. I researched the company, the industry they were in, and their competitors. I also went through each bullet point on the job description and wrote down examples of how I’d successfully completed that task at my previous jobs. I did all my research about a week before my interview. On the day of my interview, I felt confident! I completed all my research, created a presentation for the CEO (which displayed new ideas I had for their website, social media plans, and marketing ideas for their firm), and dressed for success- Black suit, minimal jewelry and makeup, closed-toe shoes, and a smile. Needless to say, my interview went perfectly! They were so impressed by my ideas and the fact that I had done so much research. They hired me two days later. I had everything I’d hoped for- the marketing title, a great salary, and a company I could grow with.
Some people may not realize how important it is to do your research and fully prepare yourself for an interview. Preparation is the key. It helps boost your confidence and sets you apart from the other candidates. Why should they hire you? What makes you different? What do you know about our company? Tell me about yourself? Those are some key questions you BETTER have solid answers to if you hope to get the job.

AIR FORCE VETERAN
I am an Air Force Veteran, serving from 2001 to 2005, during the chaos that was September 11th. The Air Force gave me many things: security, job training, good living conditions, and a purpose for the four years of my life. I got to fly all over Europe and the Middle East, got to sample authentic New England Clam Chowder, Middle Eastern Sharma, and the best meal of my life, House Octopus, from a little hole in the wall in The Azores, Portugal. I saw the pyramids in person and watched as a little old man prodded goats with a stick across an orange orchard in Sicily. I had a 14-year-old kid throw dust at my feet and cuss at me in Arabic, afterward receiving the most sincere apology from his grandmother on the Persian Gulf. Her warmness was palpable.
When I separated there was no real transitional help. We got our medical exams and signed off on the transfer of military property, but there was no help in entering the civilian world. My out processing was just paperwork. The first job I got after leaving was as a waiter, which I failed at, miserably. For six months I found myself in a funk, not wanting to find a job because I feared the inevitable rejection. Eventually, with the help of my parents and friends, I got on track but for a while, I was quite lost.
This past semester I had the honor of taking Ms. Johnson's "How to Get a Job" class, where I learned for the first time the concept of Personal Branding. I immediately recognized how celebrities and C-level managers have been using the values of the course for years in weaving an image reflecting their strengths and desires. I noticed how even Paris Hilton has a Personal Brand and saw clearly the course content being a Rosetta stone unlocking the secrets of the rich and powerful. In conjunction with Dr. Tartar’s "Strategic Leadership" class, I saw the value in life planning and was given a vision of creative career construction. I was given a sight of myself as I wanted to be. No longer eager to take any job offered, I set about crafting a persona reflecting my unique skills and background, seasoned with work history, and baked in my personal ambition.
Ms. Johnson has given me a life-long gift: a sense of control over my own employment future, and more than that, a sense that I am the practical controller of my life. She provided for me what the Air Force did not. And though I treasure the time I spent in the service, it never could provide what my Instructor did for me. I highly recommend the class to anyone who may find themselves in someone else's plan and who desire to take control of their future.

I was formally made an offer today for the Internship/Co-op with Ingersoll Rand with their Operations Excellence team where I'll utilize my process improvement skills in addition to my HR knowledge. I GOT A JOB!
Hello There!
This is your former student T. C (the one that was doing handiwork with her mom at a young age)...Last time we spoke, you wanted me to contact you when I landed a job, so, here I am!
I graduated with my B.B.A in Marketing on December 15, 2012, and moved to Frisco, TX a month later on Jan 15, 2013, it was at this point that I started my job search in the Dallas area. I went to a total of 6 interviews, 2 of them were second interviews and even got offered a position with a marketing firm that I turned down, respectively, before accepting the position as Project Administrator at CROSSMARK, a leading sales and marketing services company in the consumer goods industry.
I will wrap this up by saying thank you for your enthusiasm while teaching HOW TO GET A JOB, and for stressing the importance of the material. It made the entire job search process less stressful than I thought it was going to be. I'm so excited to start working in the marketing industry and blessed that I have the opportunity to so quickly. Thanks again for your contribution to this major accomplishment in my life.
- T. C.
GOT A RAISE BEFORE ASKING
On a different note, I also wanted to share with you that since I graduated I joined organizations within my industry, took the initiative of signing up for my organization's conference, and consistently wore a suit in a casual business attire environment; I got a raise at Dixon Services before I even had to ask for one and they offered to pay for the conference and the expenses involved. They want to invest in future seminars the organizations will have which is really exciting for me because I enjoy learning and what I do. I was surprised because this hasn't been done for our land techs in the past. My business manager said it's because Mr. Dixon never had an enthusiastic land tech before. In the past, land techs, which are more than just a landsman’s secretary, have wanted to be landsmen due to the 'big day rate' or just whining for more money. So Mr. Dixon is very excited to hear I want to be a better land tech and an asset to the company.
I want to thank you for the 'how to get a job' class and exposing the students to what successful business would be looking for in an employee. It greatly benefited me and made me self evaluate my current position and my future.

STRAIGHT FROM THE WORKBOOK – PROVING YOUR VALUE
Your presentation was on point and created a lively discussion. My favorite part of the meeting was the emphasis around ‘What is your unique value and can you prove it? [a concept straight out of the workbook]’. This reminded me of the importance of backing up what you say you can do.

DON'T IGNORE THE CLUES HOPING THINGS WILL GET BETTER….. THEY JUST GET WORSE.
I got my first !WONTUOTEG clue (Clue #1) on the day I turned in my job application to a fast-food restaurant. I started a conversation with the lady I submitted my application to, and she told me that it was her last day to work at the store. I asked her why, and she smiled and said, “you find out the reason when you start working here. I hope that will not be the same reason that you quit”.
On my first day on the job, I had the opportunity to work with one of my school mates. When I tried talking to her to get the scoop on what was going on in the company, my classmate stated, “first off, I am leaving this job next week, the managers here are terrible” (Clue #2). As she was about to explain why she is leaving, a group of guests came in and we did not have a chance to finish our conversation. Unfortunately, our schedule never did line up again before she left the job.
Six months later, I understood why people were quitting. My experience with the managers was similar to what three other people had experienced during those months. The managers have a set of people they call their ‘chickens’. Whatever these people do is good in the eyes of their managers whether it is in the company’s rules or not. They were allowed to cook whatever they wanted without ringing up their food, use their phone on duty; they did not even clock out when the managers sent them errands that were not job-related. (Clue #3)
One night I was supposed to get off at 10 pm, but the manager would not let me get off on time. The day was so slow that I started rounding (cleaning up) at 9:45 pm. (My shift was supposed to be from 5-10 pm). At 10 pm I was done and ready for the next person to take over my shift. I asked my immediate manager (while she was busy talking on her cell phone) if I was good to go. She asked me if I was sure everywhere was looking good. I told her yes. She told me to give her a few minutes, that when she was done on the phone I could leave. At 10:10, I could not wait anymore because I had an assignment that was due that night at 11:59 pm; I had not intended to stay late. She was still on the phone laughing. I signaled to her that I was leaving; I did not wait for her to respond. I immediately turned my back and clocked out.
The next day I worked, it happened that she was off duty. I was handed a ‘write up’ paper to sign. I was so surprised to see the reason for the write up was “bathroom was not clean”. (Clue #4). I was aggravated and went to complain to the hiring manager. I explained that the bathroom was spotless at the time I left. The hiring manager told me that he believed me, but instructed me to sign the ‘write up’ paper first; then he would talk with her to hear her side of the story. At first, I did not want to sign the paper, but the hiring manager told me it’s not a big deal; but, it was to me. I ended up signing the write-up.
Self Assessment/Determine What You Want
I had reasons to leave the job, but since I was attending junior college, I needed the income. I also had no means of transportation it was almost impossible to get another job. So I believed I was stuck at this job. However, after this write up, I went on to experience several more and it got to the point that I made did a serious self-assessment. Management does not care about the rate of turnover
Managers give “special treatment” to some employees which are inappropriate
Even though I knew my career was not in this line of business, I applied because I wanted a customer service experience
I also wanted to work in a healthy work environment where rules and regulations were followed and where there is no part between the way managers relates to employees
I wanted to work in a place where managers are fair to all employees.
I realized I missed my first clue, but when I saw the second clue, I ignored it hoping things would be better….. but they just got worse.
Background investigation
What kind of management exists in the company?
Is there room for growth in the company?
How do employees respond to rules and management in the company?
Did you !WONTUOTEG?
Yes. I decided to leave the job, even though at the time I left I did not have a job. But now, I have a better job.
LEADERSHIP
If you have a leader [in any environment] that is more concerned about his or her advancement, than the safety and security of the team-- !wontuoteg
My !wontuoteg moment would have to have taken place while I was in the United States Marine Corps. I originally joined because of money for education so that I could maybe have a chance to go and finish a college degree. I decided to join as infantry, and during the process of it all I ended up loving the lifestyle. During my time in the Corps, I debated many times about whether to stay in or get out. I was good at my job as a machine gunner and was good at gaining the respect from my peers. I picked up rank the fastest and was promoted first among my peers.
When we got back from Iraq the first time, all of the seniors got out and I was promoted to section leader. This was a job that was two ranks above my pay grade. A promotion like this was an unheard accomplishment, and I enjoyed being in the position. I also received two Navy Achievement Medals for Leadership recognition.
Before we went to Iraq again, we got a change of leadership in our battalion (Clue #1). Just like any other institution, when new management comes in there is a severe change in leadership whether it is for the better or worse. Our old leader got promoted to colonel for performing his duties above and beyond his pay grade. The new "battalion commander" from the very start was egocentric to where he seemed he was always worried about being in the fight like it was a video game (Clue #2). When we went to Iraq again, every time a mission came up he wanted to put his Marines out there because they could handle the job. It didn't matter whether the mission was poorly put together and that there was a severe lack of intelligence. We have put out time and time again, even when I, as well as, other officers voiced opposition against some of the missions (Clue #3).
As a Marine though, you do as you're told regardless of whether you know best or not. Over and over, Marines were put in dangerous situations. but he [the battalion commander] was awarded his medals at the cost of some unneeded situations and harsh consequences for those situations. By the time we got back to the states, my First Sergeant, and other higher-ups wanted me to re-enlist. Instead, I signed up for school and applied for an early exit.
That was my moment! It was time for me to "get out now." If you have a leader [in any environment] that is more concerned about his or her advancement, than the safety and security of his team-- !wontuoteg.
- U.T., TYLER STUDENT
DON’T IGNORE THE CLUES
Don’t ignore the clues and ‘run the other way’-- learn from your experiences.
"Today is the first day of the rest of your life" (Jennifer's Dad). This is my favorite new quote after reading !wontuoteg.
I loved this short book about getting out and recognizing change. l think it is so crazy how things happen in your life and then you are reminded to look back on what happened so that you learn from your experiences. I definitely had, !wontuoteg experience, that ties into a lot of characters in the book. The awesome thing about my whole experience is that it is still really fresh.
I worked for a property leasing business for 9 months, when a new company bought our property for $22,000,000 dollars. That transaction was the first day of the rest of my life! I didn't see the clues and, did not recognize the problem. The new company immediately got rid of the manager and the assistant manager. The only employees left, were the maintenance crew and a few community assistants, the leasing director, and me. It was not long before they were also gone. It would eventually be just me and one of my dear friends.
The new manager was a hothead; a very hard person to work for (Clue #1). She was my Susan; she did not care if you had to stay at work until midnight, that's what you were going to do. Despite her personality, we got along great, and she saw that I was a hard worker and an excellent leader. So, she made me her assistant manager. Well, was I in trouble when I took that position! I was just thinking this job will look great on my resume; it is so much money for my age. However, it did not take long until the hard work I was putting in, got shoved to the side (Clue #2). Susan was focused on bigger problems and I was on my own when it came to evicting people; and, going to court for non-payment of rent.
When my 3-month evaluation with the new company came up, I told the manager I couldn’t do the job anymore. I was a full-time student, working 50 hours a week. I told her, you need to find somewhere else to put me. She quickly apologized and said, “I would love to have you as our Marketing/Leasing Director. “You have a great talent at the sell, and I really think you would be great at meeting with businesses and different community leaders.” We are really behind in our numbers at that time and needed a lot of ‘push’ to fill our apartment community. So, I told her l would love to be involved with the outside part of our business and once again thought, it would be another great title for my resume.
Wrong again! Susan hired a friend of hers that had no idea how to do the bookkeeping for the property (my old job) (Clue #3). So what do you think this led to? The friend always asking me questions, which kept me from doing my new job.
At this point, the manager had succeeded in running off all of the staff; and, the complex was in the rebuilding process with a weak team. It was getting closer to the end of the leasing season, and the end of school and we were still behind on our numbers (Clue #4). Corporate was breathing down my back about not doing my job right. They were sending me ‘Cupcakes’, instead of solid contributors, that was a waste of my time, and a holdback to what I needed to get done.
I ignored the “clues’ and I ran the other way; because I needed the money and the lifestyle it provided. There was no ‘job joy’. Eventually, I saw that things were only going to get worse, and I had to get out while I had the chance. So I turned in my two weeks’ notice and ‘got a life, got a clue, and got out!’
- U.T., TYLER STUDENT
I MISSED THE CLUES
After reading the book,! WONTUOTEG, I can surely say that I share some of the same experiences that Jennifer went through. Unfortunately, I did not have someone to help point out the clues. Now, having hindsight, the clues are very clear. Let's start out by looking at the clues offered at the beginning.
3 Step Assessment
(1) I was not pleased with the direction that my career was headed and there was no job joy. At this particular company, I was heading into a long career that had no bright future. Looking back at my experience at the company, several of the different personalities jump out at me.
(2) I was working for a group of high ranking managers that fell into the "ole codgers" category. Their ways were set and they had all of the control. I was facing the fact that I was headed for 15 to 20 years of working in a position that offered no advancement; and, with the real likelihood of having to work many late nights. I was just as productive as those that had the good positions and was even more flexible in working several different positions; but, I was stuck. But…this was the way it was done for years.
I was stuck working with the "look at me" and "fair-haired boy" types. One was in a position that was given to him because he was a relative and the other was doing all that he could to be noticed so that he could attain status and move up the ladder quickly.
Most of the supervisors fell into the "stooges" types because they would laugh with you and then go tell management that you were not working.
(3) After about 5 years, my eye-opening moment came. I, along with some others, was told that we were being moved to a position that none of us wanted. Our choice was to move or quit. Reality made me sit down and ponder if this is what I wanted. An opportunity came for me to leave and go to another company. It was now or never. I chose to have a life, I saw the clues, and I got out [!wontuoteg].
Business in the food industry had its security, but happiness and a feeling of belonging are more important. After several more tries on jobs, I can now say that I have “job joy”, and I look forward to the challenges ahead.
The good news, after reading! WONTUOTEG, I will now be looking for the clues!

More importantly, they learned how to communicate that value to others, which is essential for career growth.
